Budget cuts endanger area zoos and the lives of animals

Zoo New England announced this weekend that Governor Deval Patrick's slashing of zoo aid will mean the closing of at least two local zoos and the euthanizing of many if not all of the animals.

Let me get this straight.

Massachusetts spends $2 million per month to house the homeless overflow in hotel rooms. The state gives welfare recipients free vehicles with insurance and AAA memberships paid for by Massachusetts state taxpayers. Massachusetts plans to spend $70 million on health care for unemployed illegal immigrants.

Gov. Deval Patrick has added roughly 2.000 people to the state payroll since he took office two years ago: including his friend, neighbor and campaign contributor Dana Harrell, who pulls in $120,000 as the Director of Real Estate Services, a job that never existed before.

Massachusetts has just raised the state sales tax by 25 percent. We now tax items that use to be tax free such as food and clothing. Registry of Motor Vehicles fees have increased.

And now the Patrick administration wants to close our zoos and kill the animals? Somebody want to explain the logic behind this to my little pea brain?

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!!  They cannot let that happen!! Close the zoos if need be  but I am sure they can transport those animals elsewhere!!!!

They have already put out feelers to other zoos, and some animals will be able to be relocated, but most of the other zoos are facing similar problems with budget cuts and can barely care for their existing animals.

This is just WRONG!!! 

I wonder if our Best Friends Animal Society (Dogtown, etc.) know about this and could take on any of the animals?

That's an easy (no brainer if you ask me) $94 million that could and should, be re-allocated to the zoos.

Hey a dog is for life! not just for christmas! they run loads of adds like that over here, surely its the same for zoo animals!!  its all down to money/greed as usual, If somebody brought a pet dog, and 3 months down the line didn't want it anymore would it be right to just kill it??  we really are a screwed up animal! We do like to think we can play god don't we, i reckon it would be better if we just left things alone in the first place!
