Here is a totally trivial fact which I just happened to spot on the 'net'.. Just thought I would share it with ya!   (Can't say that it's ever crossed my mind before... lol)

What is the difference between data and information?

The term data refers to factual information, especially that used for analysis and based on reasoning or calculation. Data itself has no meaning, but becomes information when it is interpreted. Information is a collection of facts or data that is communicated. However, in many contexts they are considered and are used as synonyms. Data, by the way, is the plural of datum. Information comes from Latin informationem 'concept, idea' or 'outline'.

P.S. - So, is this posting Data or Information? I'm confused... lol

It would depend on rather your collecting information for analysis..then it data and afterwards it becomes information. But there's all kinds of information also, there's the bad stuff, such as gosspi, there's the wrong stuff, such as lies, and there' s the opinionated stuff also....but I would say "Information" is simply communication that you may have not known prior myself. Data is more like detailed gathering for an specific reason....or motive, which can be either good ro bad, correct or false. Is any of this in reguard to the webbot project of "half-past human" web site by any chance?

Good question, Toby.  I think your posting is a little of both.  The data portion is probably the Latin citation.  But I think overall the posting is info.  Data is usually just raw numbers and once the numbers are compiled into statistics, the stats are then interpreted to provide information.  (I think, Undecided).

I think of data as statistics, information is a breakdown and explanation of those statistics Smile

It's getting kind of scarey over there, probably an good thing Toby, he's been right on with his predictions and he's got an real "shaker" coming up for Oct. 25th...but not quite sure what its going to be as yet...just picking up the webbot language for it. He's thinking Isreal maybe nuking Iran, but not sure as of yet, I hope they stop it and anything else before it happens, says its going to throw Washington D. C. into chaos for several days thereafter. Things are not good here right now in ways, esp economically. People they help wasting the money, taking it abroad instead of using domesticaly to improve things, that sort of stuff going on. Supposedly Obama just granted 20 million to move Paestinians over here and support them also, when he can't seem to support our own citizens as it is. About the only thing he does is spend more money...and its not his money...and its generally for someone else at that. Guess we will have to wait and see...hope its nothing to bad for everyone.
