I saw on the news last night, they're starting to serve breakfasts at a school in Derby. The reason? because, they say the low income parents can't afford to give their children breakfast before sending them to school!!

Now surely feeding your children comes pretty high on the list of priorities?

People have lived through much harder times than we live in now, but managed to feed their children breakfast!

I wonder how many of these low income families smoke, drink alcohol regulary? and i wonder how many have the latest TV's music systems? be interesting to find out!

Well done to the school for identifying the problem, but hey, it shouldn't really be down to the school to feed them in my opinion!!

What does everyone think??

If you can feed yourself, you can feed your kids!!!! I wonder if any of these parents go without food during the day!!!! They should quit smoking and drinking and going out if they are so strapped for money!!!!!

It's junk!! Lame a#* excuses if you ask me!!!!

Actually, I agree with both of you but there is a flip side to this coin. As children my siblings and I often ate breakfast at school otherwise we would have not had anything at all. My stepfather was a drug addict and my mother enabled him by turning over her paychecks to him to use as he saw fit. This often meant no food in the house for us kids.

So, while I agree with you in theory Jason and Krissy, it is the innocent children who suffer, not the parents.

Now, ask me how I feel about sterilization for such parents! Lol.

I agree Diana, which is why i said good on the school for identifying the problem. But what a cr*p society we live in, where parents can't be bothered to feed their young, for whatever excuse they choose to use!

A poignant song from a movie by the same name:

Bless the Beasts and the Children

Bless the beasts and the children
For in this world they have no voice
They have no choice

Bless the beasts and the children
For the world can never be
The world they see

Light their way
When the darkness surrounds them
Give them love
Let it shine all around them

Our local grammar (primary) school, offers breakfast, and it's a real godsend for those hungry little kids.

Some of the families don't feed their children because they spend there monies on booze, drugs, entertainment. But others are poor, just plain, down to earth poor, and if the school (taxes) can help them, I say, go for it.

There shouldn't be any family in this country too poor to feed their child a breakfast! breakfast can be VERY cheap, and anything is better than nothing!  anyone who doesn't work gets benefit, ok it may not be a lot, but surely feeding your children is a high priority?

It is a high priority, even for some good, but poor families. But for some of those families it can be a choice between breakfast or shoes. Which would you choose for your child?

No, if feeding them breakfast at the tax payers expense can help them clothe there child better, I'm all for it.

And yes, there are always those ready to abuse the system, but we can't penalize the children or the parents who are really trying.

Breakfast can be so cheap though, it can't be compared to shoes? a box of supermarket own brand cereal and a pint of milk would last all week, and really hardly costs anything.
