Perhaps it was Henry Mancini you were refering to Rita, and whose later compositons tended to favor a driving bass line that he seemed to like.

Some of those old tunes are lovely to dance to as you can always hear the "beat" like the music by Victor Sylvester, when Strickly Come Dancing is on with modern songs I do wonder how they can dance to them.

Tucson, Arizona's own Linda Ronstadt did a couple of records of old standards.  One was called What's New and the other, I think was called Lush Life.  I know What's New was recorded with the Nelson Riddle orchestra.  She can really belt them out.
