Hi Cathyml. In cockney slang,a lot of the sayings get shortened. So butchers hook becomes butchers. The word that rhymes gets dropped. It was the East End boys secret language. When the law came round they used the slang,less the last word,and the coppers didnt know what they were talking about. Who would know that "Take a butchers at my skin eating that ruby" meant, take a look at my sister eating that curry. Unless of course the officer came from the east end of London that is.
