                    Hi Ruth,

                    In the Cornish sense "scat" means broken, finished, kaput etc

                    ie It's back to the old ways to make a living.

                   ps. Watch the news on South Crofty in the near future, the last tin mine to close in the late 90's that ended an industry that went back 3,000 to 4,000 years. they are trying to reopen the mine now that tin and other resourses are a higher price. They have recently found evidence of gold , silver , and significant amounts of indium.

Wow, very cool, Vince.  So it was a scat knot after all.  lol

Scat over here is something you say (particularly to a cat) when you want it to get lost.  "SCAT!"

It's also droppings, particularly of wildlife.  "The biologists, examining the scat of a coyote, found that it had eaten a rabbit and a bunch of berries."

PS My grandfather was a coal miner.
