It's good to be pro-active, but not obsessive.

I agree with you, Sue. I usually have an annual exam and two preventive dentist visits. Unfortunately once I became unemployed and couldn't afford my medical insurance those visits had to be put on hold. But, now that I am working again I'll be getting back into my annual checkups.

Other than that I try to eat healthy (usually) and cut out as much excess sugar and salt as possible.

I've heard about people who go for body scans to find out if they have any genetic predispositions to a particular disease and I have to wonder why? Why would you want to know if you are likely to get something there is no cure for..i.e. Alzheimer's? There is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it (at least not at this time) and knowing about it would only rob me of my peace of mind.

That's not true Diana....this lady that did an photo "aura" on me, she detected heart problems probably 10 plus years prior. She was the one that told me to take potassium in small amounts..or I might of had more problems then I did earlier. George Noory goes for scans on his arteries right now to make sure he has no more clogged up ones, they have the medicine and techniques to un-clog them now to prevent heart attacks. He goes in for an partial cat--scan....they did one on me about an year ago. They can't do an MRI because of the metal in my mouth...and possibly in my heart stent....but they took the scan up to under my breast...and stopped.  When you have aqn doctor that says nothing can be done about something...then you got the wrong doctor lady. When you have an doctor that gives you "treatments".... but there's never an cure....there's something wrong also. for most of us the cure never comes... because we don't have the money to pay for it. If the medical society would deal with the cost...they'd never run out of patients. Japanese are into the "genetics" of people right now. They eant to change your genes and prevent it before it can happen also, just like Dr. Christopher Wilde is growing "new" tissue and organs...with other countries in the world. If people can grow thier own organs again, from their own tissue, there's no "rejection" drugs to take forever...and there's no liitle kids in foreign countries... being killed/murdered... to sell thier organs to others as an money scam. I read an channler one time say from supposedly "Atlantis" that when to people aged so far, they simple went in and had thier bodies "re-energied" again so they never aged, or had medical problems...henceforth he says the living to 600 and 900 years old... as in the bible... was really true.

I am reading this morning in the paper about E-Coli and why its so prevenant in our food sources these days. It starts with the big farmers in most cases...and it talks about both veggies and meat sources...and produce is now so wide spread out in the world these days because they  ship to so many different countries. It is hard to isolate it also for the source to test for it apparently. That shipping it also means its not as closiely watched for holding it properly until it arrrives to its destination also. So if it's not kept properly the E-coli is spreading at an rate of every 20 mins. in multiplying itself. They did bring up some interesting stuff though...one of them being when I was an kid and people use to buy thier beef or pigs...they ususally bought from an local farmer raising them expressly for them. Henceforth the animal was raised..grass fed most often also...until the people needed the beef for their freezer. the animal was slaughtered and wrapped and the packages labeled as to what animal it came from...and it's release date to the customer. Now what you have going on is many cattle being fattened up off corn (GMO seed and other dead animal aste products often).. in feed lots...where if one is sick...they can all catch it....and the animals are all processed together..ususally at the same time...and hundreds of pounds of beef is made up at once....so you have this constant higher cross contamination factor going on...say they grind up 600 pounds in ground beef and package it in tubes...maybe one animal needed disposed of...but now ALL the meat must be disposed of because it's all mixed together with the tainted food from one sick cow. The out break of e-coli has to be severe enough that until it already afffects an lot of people authorities don't go checking into it. They also said that they went to one farm here in eastern Oregon, where they traced it down to some tainted Pork...and tested the soil, the pigs, the farm itself....they found it everywhere...they found out that the farmland with it's feces had been flooded that Spring and it was literally growing all over in everything by summer. I still say much of it has to do with them using human fertlizer these days also...they are not waiting long enough for it to break down as an fertilzer before planting. There again, they do not know how the modified seed crops fight off such an problem either...in feeding it to the beef either. Anyway, it was an interesting article...and of course rinsing off your food and cooking it throughly and storing it properly has much to do with it all as well. It pays to buy small and local... in all instances know the growing conditions if possible. E-coli can be killed at the end of its processing with Gamma Rays and/or Electron lasers. Iwonder if we should have one at our houses...or if an microwave oven suffices enough.

I've lost 15 now since the first of May.  How many stones is that, Ron?

Do you mind if I answer, Ruth?

there are 14 pounds in a stone, so you've lost one stone one pound.

Thats allot of weight in two months, Ruth.

Thank you for the answer, Sue.  As for the amount of weight, I set a goal for 20 lbs in 3 months, so I"m on track to get there (hopefully).  I would like to lose a total of 2 and a half stones by the end of the year.

Marjorie - that's wonderful!  Doesn't if feel good?

Hi Sue:  Actually the only plan is what I described in the opening post - mainly avoiding sweets.  I'm actually trying to make a permanent lifestyle change with good eating habits.  I never eat anything sweet early in the day, and I read labels incessantly.  If one of the first ingredients listed is sugar or high fructose corn syrup, I avoid it like the plague.  It's kind of depressing though - stuff you think's healthy is loaded with sugar - like raisin bran and fruity yogurts.  I also try to avoid white flour stuff and stick to whole grain, if possible.  White flour is a simple carb that metabolizes into sugar.

By not eating sweets early in the day, you don't suffer those blood sugar spikes that make you think you're always hungry.  I'm trying to master sweets instead of them mastering me.  So that allows me to have them on occasion.  Yesterday me and hubby went out for our anniversary dinner and I had a half piece of lemon passion cake and a half piece of Ghiradelli chocolate cake for dessert.  I most definitely enjoyed them, but today, I can take them or leave them.  By not eating sweets all the time, you eventually stop craving them.  It seems to be working for me.  And it's easier to serve yourself smaller portions and go between meals without snacking if you're not craving all the time, which excess sugar makes you do.  Mind you, I'm not starving.  The worst thing you can do is to starve yourself.  Your body interprets that as "famine" and slows your metabolism down in order to hang on to fat to help you survive.

I also have been going on longer and faster walks, nothing like race walking or anything strenuous, just a brisk walk.  I do a 10-minute walk at normal speed (this burns off the available glucose in your bloodstream), followed by 30 minutes of "brisk walking", followed by 5 minutes of normal speed walking to cool down.  The brisk part is where your body gets 85% of the energy it nees to continue the walk from fat burning.  Thank God I have a dog who makes me do this at least 6 days a week.  :-)  I do a little weight training on Saturday nights whilst I watch my British comedies on TV.

I hope to lose 5 or 6 more by the end of July and then another 15 by the end of the year.  I try to set goals in reasonable monthly increments and have determined to stay the course even if the weight loss plateaus.  I notice how much better I feel, too.
