Why Is It That Taxi Drivers Think Speed Limits Don't Apply To Them?

Over here, the police don't cite you for speeding unless you're exceeding the limit by 10 MPH or more.  So people are always speeding.  If I'm only driving 5 or 7 MPH over the limit on a freeway, I need to drive in the center lane so people have both sides to pass me!  It's crazy.  If you drive the speed limit, you're actully obstructing the flow of traffic.  And we're talking freeways with 75 MPH limits.

We had speed cameras and they helped somewhat, but they did away with them last year because of the public outcry.

In my local area, the speed allowed before speed cameras go off has been reduced.  It now seems to be 10% + 1 mph and over that, the camera gets triggered.  And you'd expect the local authority to at least sign post speed limits correctly.  As an example below, the road crossing the photo has a 30 MPH speed limit---built up area---but if you turn into the side road facing you, what is the speed limit going down this road?

Hi everyone,

An interesting situation that Paul. It reminds me of the road past our property. (Can hardly forget that could I?). We are in the country and the speed limit on country roads in SA (not motorways) is 100 KMH - about 60 - ish MPH. Coming towards our place the limit is posted at 100 but going the other way, back towards the City, it is 60. Somewhat bizarre but true. Of course being SA no one takes much notice of speed limits on roads where there are no cameras so anything goes.

Good night.

The situation above revolves around the 20 MPH Zonal sign on the right side of the road.

After reading earlier posts regarding South Africa, I thought it ironic one of the many speed camera types now in use in the UK comes from South Africa;  Truvelo which uses sensors in the road.   http://www.truvelouk.com/

Thank you Syd.  I must say though that working for them I couldn't have handled it if I had been caught speeding by our own equipment, so always travelled at the speed limit (well almost at the speed limit give or take 5km).  Still do actually!!

Confuscius he say: "driver who drives at speed limit doesn't fear cameras".

Or, if he has a good satnav to tell him where they are.
