It's simple David they hide, and then after 15 years or so the government will say, let them stay! Not as though they are doing any harm is it? Hmmn!!

Ron: perhaps the leniency is because those immigrants are from "third world" poverty-stricken or unstable countries?  My understanding is that if someone like me tried that (and I'm not above such shenanigans!) I'd be immediately deported back to the US, since my country of origin is (so far) not that bad a place to be from, if you know what I mean--no grounds to claim political persecution, etc.  Compared to Pakistan, for example.  Does that hypothesis make sense?
