I'm so pi**ed off!!  (Sorry)  I've just heard that planning permission has been given to demolish Earls Court Exhibition Hall an historic London building, to make way for housing.  Why am I angry? Because the government choose to keep that bl...y big eyesore and white elephant, Battersea Power Station!  No one can find the money to take on the power station as it is in such a poor state of repair, and the government have promised to give substantial funding (our money) to it's redevelopment.  I'm sure Earls Court could be preserved and re-used for something worthwhile without huge funding from the public purse.

OOPS SORRY POE, I hope Ron can delete one of my posts please as I have managed to put it on twice.  Thank you Ron & POE

It's because you hit the refresh button Toby. Use the 'Latest Posts' link in the top left menu and all will be well, but hey you know what, I didn't delete it so thanks to the Moderator who did.

Shame that the place will probably be soon just a memory. I went there for quite a few motor shows and the Great British Beer Festivals. Happy times indeed. Lots of memories for me.

Hi Ron,

That's exactly what I was thinking. More 'luxury apartments' which will be too expensive for the locals yet handed out like sweets to immigrants.  I'm glad that you are not worried about telling it like it is Ron. I, like many others, feel that I have to suppress my opinions for fear of being classed as a racist. In fact as you know, racism doesn't even come into the equasion, we just care about what is happening to Britain!

I also agree with what has already been said--it seems its the thing to do these days -i have seen old stone buildings demolished to make way for far more inferior buildings.Frown

As I was walking through Earls Court in to a pub I was lured.

When a nosey pom said, "Where you from?" as I downed the Amber fluid.

I said, "Now get it straight, I'm an Aussie mate and I'm looking to get plastered."

"But the beer is crook and the birds all look like you, you pommy b****rd!"

You guys sound like England feels much the same we do as to our southern nieghbors coming north. We never had an problem when they came in like any other foreigner did...it's when the came in illegally...and robbed and murdered the people that got in their way and started bring up the drug cartel with them that got us all upset.Their sheer strength in numbers questions our abilty to have an country of freedom for everyone these days. Least we not forget..there is still the eleminate of loyalty to Mexico..while living off the sweat of workers here to provide them with "free" services. Now they have slipped the foot in the door..they are seeking politcal postions in our local Governments and they really don't understand any more then an third world country situation of leadership...also they walked out on "unions"...some are bad...but not having them keeps us all earning little more the minium wage. Those are the people that Obama expects to pay higher taxes? The super wealthy have so many tax deductions to take to keep from ever paying their rightful percentage...why does he not find ways to get them to pay thier rightful amount. This was brought up on talk radio the other night ..that when our country was "founded" that our leaders most the time had pledged every dime and dollar to see our freedom...not these days. these days your considered "poor" and "stupid" if your not legally bilking the Government. As to your historical places...I know they are costly sometimes to renovate...but preserving your past means giving your kids and grandkids an "living" history they can go an visit. Something they can touch and say...my parents use to visit this place when I was an kid...my great grandpa...he drank anhis first ale here growing up. So forth. It's only when its not preserved correctly that the idea seems to sour I guess. People can live underground...why don't they do that for the new housing constrution and leave the land as open as possible. You don't have an lot of earthquakes over there to really be fearful of it damaging things underground either. The Japanese have such an huge population they went to build high rises that they had to install mirrors along the building walls and through them to give the people "daylight" in thier apartments down below...that concept can also be easily applied to living structures underground also. I was reading the other day about some countries with hurricanes...how they are using the concept of under ground growing to keep their crops from being damaged form hurricane force winds...and flat roof on top...nothing to be blown over and the water can be drined away or saved for watering the plants. Small farmer's over here..many of them lost their fields due to lack of irrigation methods. The little trees just turned an crimson red..baking in the sun.. and died.

I've got several Daily Mail Motor Show magazines from the mid-60s to early 70s showing all the cars and stands on display there.

At one point in the 70s, the area of Earls Court was the 2nd most densely populated place in the world after some place in China. I suspect it also had the most VW Micro buses in one place as well, having been driven up from Oz.
