Wow, very interesting conversation to snoop on, and quite a disappointment to me as well, as I am considered a great snob by my friends because I always say "Oh I HATE American bars, it's nothing like Britain..." so I do hope that they haven't changed so very much in the 13 years since I was last there.

You see, you can go to American bars with your friends and try to have a fun night out, but the other people there always ruin it (at least for me) because they want to hit on you, or they are fall-down drunk and they spill things on you, and it ends up feeling like you're really just on display.  There's no charm, and there's certainly no "community" unless you happen to be a regular.

When I was last in Britain (and I was only 21 so prime target for the meat market scene), I never once felt the way I do in American bars.  It was never so noisy that it was impossible to have a conversation except for the last night of finals, but that was understandable.  There was atmosphere, people were friendly (and not in a creepy way), frequently there was excellent live music (particularly in Scotland and Ireland) so there was nothing to complain about.  Except the grandfatherly bartender who was a little patronizing about not giving me a triple brandy... but that was ok too.

I can say that alcohol makes me laugh a lot... I start to laugh for everything and nobody can stop me.

Reason you don' t like American bars is for the reason they aren't like pubs for gathering for local talk these days...and your absoutlely correct in that guys want to hit on gals rather uncalled for in some ways. Stay out of the cities if you can and go out into the suburbs and pick an nice place that serves dinner at the same time and enjoy the lounge there and you'll find yourself happier. For one thing people will know each other at these places and be regular customers. Not so in the cities these days I am afraid...mostly filled with strangers. Believe me...I'm an American and I've seen things change over the years...so I understand. I'm starting up an "Tea time" amoung my friends...just so we can go somewhere and talk and meet other ladies that aren't out looking for an guy, just want to have an pleasant evening for an bit...I have suggested besides my own house...restruants...local community parks...gathering places... I'll let your know how it goes. First thing I ran into is trying to get an compatible time that everyone isn't working, going to school, or in general not having family to take care of.  I'm asking once every three months...for two hours..give to take for "visiting" and having an dessert with the tea.  I suggested starting it out buy bringing interesting tea cups and maybe sharing where they got them and who made them for conversation starters before the "What do you do" introductions. They just closed down my favorite hang-out when I was younger...only place I could get an truly "melt in your mouth" steak with yorkshire pudding. Best time we ever had there was when we ate dinner with an roving "magician" in the place, coming up and picking gold coins out of our ears...cards out of our hair..taking our silverware...as he flashed around scarves. Couple of times he pulled out of his hat the jewerly we were wearing off our necks. Other best time we had was at an crazy mexican restruant...where they pulled little 80 year old ruth out away from the table because it was her birthday and presented her with an song...and flamigo dancing around the chair...where the waiters were so tired, they pulled up and chair and sat down beside to take the food order...where they made an mistake with one of the girl's orders...so when she told him he said what did you order sweetie..she said "chicken" so out from his apron he threw an rubber chicken on the table in front of her..and by the time we got down with the margarita's those of us that didnt' drink to often...were really feeling mellow..shall we call it. Wehad great fun back in those days. One night we helped this little gal turn 21 years old...her mother had hired an group of guys from an local "gym"...muscle bound guys...they blindfoldeder her, she was leadinby her mother and her friends...and these guys dance around her..waved their hand up down her body..but never touched her..while the MC joked around her, asked her to guess where she wat at..guys .leaned over rails backwards and blew her kisses and end up the evening  by coming out with rubber bands on them and telling us we could  "feel thier muscles" for one dolllar... if we slid it under the rubber band. I went back to join my hubby watching an sports game  on the TV..because they had put "Gals only" on the doorway into this room...and he asked me...what is everyone laughing so hard over?...we can hear it in the entire resturant. AS Justin would say to me..."Shhhh"....Shirley...ah..Shhh"...bu tI've always been able to hold my own talking and try to enjoy and good evening with others. No, they don't do to much for "fun" these days any more.

I have not touched any booze for 13 years now, and gave up smoking a few years ago.  The doctor said it would do me good.  Since then I have had 4 health problems and an operation, makes you wonder !

I have donated all the money we have saved to the directors of British Gas.

Ron

The day of judgement will be upon him soon.

The people will cast aside the sinner, and those that condone his sins.

The sinner will be sent in to the wilderness, never to darken the nation again.

And so it will come to pass that the people will speak, on a Thursday, between 7am -10pm.

Be gone from this place Cameron, we will remove your evil spells that have cursed this land.

Once again we will walk in the sunshine, plants will grow and the birds will sing again.
