To add to Ruth's £ from Libra/pound-----

Libra had a few various meanings from Roman times, one of which was expanded to Libra Pondo meaning a pound by weight. The English word pound comes from the pondo part, but our abbreviations £ ( L ) and also lb. come from the Libra part.

I think you're correct with Isaac Newton Mike, I seem to remember Britannia but I think that was much earlier.

Isaac Newton on a £1 note.  This makes me think that I have discovered a money making business, if only I had the capital to launch it.

 How about producing toilet rolls with Cameron's face on every sheet ?  They should fly out of the shop quicker than xxxx off a shovel.
