Ruth, from what you say we know that David does a lot of fishing and Cod seems to be the regular catch, but are you aware of the parasite that the Cod is infested with?

Apparently Cod from the North Atlantic is affected mainly, but I can tell you I'm not buying anymore 'Cod n Chips' from the Fish and Chip shop no matter where they are! They are 'harmless' it seems when the fish is cooked, but hey you only need to see them in fresh fish to put you off completely.

If you want the technical stuff see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lernaeocera_branchialis and a Youtube clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny65i307Rs0 will put you off forever!

Hope you're not eating fish right now! lo

There is also an interesting reference at http://www.foodrepublic.com/2011/05/11/learning-about-cod-worm-hard-way which may put you at ease, but no more for me! The Cod stocks in the sea will expand rapidly I reckon.

Ron, yes we are aware of the parasite in the Cod. I have actually seen them in some Cod, on the internet, but never in the ones that David catches. We have found that the Cod from the North Sea Coast of Bridlington and Whitby are very rarely affected. But as you say in a fish & chip shop you don't know where the stuff has come from, or how closely it's been inspected whilst undergoing the processing.

We are finding now that he is catching more and more Ling, which is from much deeper water, and to me tastes a lot nicer than Cod, Ling only feed on other smaller fish, Cod will eat any old rubbish, I once gutted one and found a polystyrene coffee cup inside, they are the dustbins of the sea. The main catch when we are in Cornwall is Bass, and that seems to be fine.

You've probably gathered from my comments here that I'm not really a lover of fish (I know that Peggy is) if I never ate it again it wouldn't bother me at all. But at least I know that the Cod I am eating has been thoroughly inspected, if there was anything wrong with it he wouldn't bring it home. I have to be so careful what I eat following my food posioning 7 years ago.

Many thanks for the links Smile

There's not too much left now James, he's going again on Tuesday but just off the beach, that is if there are any left on the East coast, Spurn Head has gone. He tends only to catch Whiting from the beach and I can't stand them so they go back alive Smile

Oh good as I have haddock in the freezer.

In the local paper is a lady celebrating her 100 th birthday and is very mentally bright, she was asked to what she attributed to her long livity she said she was brought up on fish because her father was a fisherman
