As mentioned before, battery grip does improve the handling especially when using long lenses, so it's definitely worth checking out.

As for macro lens, if you are really into close-ups, then there's really nothing like a dedicated macro lens when it comes to handling and image quality.

Thank you Gemm.

I have seen your web site, and your close ups and WOW!

I have loved the results I've gotten from my little point and shoot using the macro setting, so it really is something I would like to explore in the future.

I hope everyone here has taken the time to check out your website, your pictures are jaw-dropping.

Thank you Peter and Gemm.

I did indeed mean digital, and I've narrowed it down to a Canon Rebel XTi, called a Canon EOS 400D in England.

I will play with it for a few months and hopefully have a ton of fun in May and June when I get to come 'home' to England.

Unless you want to get into the technicalities of digital photography, you can happily run on auto, and the in-built computer will take care of all the settings for you, leaving you to concentrate on taking great pics.

Exactly what I do too, Lyn.  By the way you can now see me in all my gory (that's not a typo) for the first time.  Blame Paul: he advised me on the best size for an avatar, and I followed his advice.  There ay be a better pic of me somewhere - with a bag over my head - but until I find it this wil have to do.

Ciao Alan, welcome !

..but when one owns anything like a Canon EOS, getting a bit into the technicalities of it, isn't supposed to be part of the fun? ;-)

Depends what you mean by fun, Maria.  I take pics for a commmuniy newspaper, and by the time you reset the camera for different lighting conditions etc. the pic may be gone.  The easy way works for me!  Not that I mind doing things the other way, I've always gone out of my way to make life hard for myself!
