Great bird watching at Rutland water, and of course their yearly birding fair. I hang my head in shame to say I don't remember seeing the church/museum while there. Probably too busy watching the bird life      .

It seems to me that everywhere you turn over there, there is some ancient building, carefully preserved.  What a treasure trove!  Can you imagine how much it would cost to build a building like that in today's dollars/pounds?  Or something like York Minster. My husband guesstimated York Minster would probably cost around a billion dollars to build today.

You're right, Wolf.  They were the state of the art technology of their day.  No computers, no power tools or cranes, not even a slide rule.  LOL

The only building that I've ever been in here in the US that even comes close to all the wonderful stuff over there is the US Capitol, in Washington, DC.  I believe it was built between 1800 and 1825, so it's relatively new by ancient buidling standards.  lol

Years ago I bought a house on a farm , that had been built by convicts using bricks that they had made on the property. That was just over a hundred years old at the time, and that was old for Australia. Will mail you a few photos.
