Oh dear, I read because of lack of funds POE are not taking Black and White Pictures/photographs post cards anymore. Cathyml I do not know which country the photograph I wish to post was taken; but the date is was around 1920's time. I am happy to email it if one is interested and allowed to do this privately.

Hi Joanna.  I am almost 100% positive that the building in your photograph is Rossley Manor, Dowdeswell, Nr Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.  I have found a detailed description of the building on one of the British Listed Building Websites, and would say that it  describes your building well.

However, I have not found a single picture of it on any site at all, strangely enough, and wonder if here we could request any POE photographer, that may be in or near Cheltenham, if they would be willing to get a current photo for us, to be sure it is the right building.

The Address is Rossley Manor, London Road (A40), Dowdeswell, Nr Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It is in fairly close proximity to Dowdeswell Manor.

If it is the house shown on Bing/bird's eye, then you'll have to go oneo private property to get a photo of it, but it looks promising.

You can see it here on Bing tab then rotate it to see the front of the building mostly now hidden by trees.

This is a wonderful find Cathyml you have done so well thank you so much. I will see if someone I know in Cheltenham can take a sneaky photograph or ask if they could maybe better thank you again. If anyone else manages in the meantime I will send it if I get one first.

The roof line matches virtually exactly. I would say that is a positive identification!

Thanks so much Paul.

Duh!  if I had only realised how to use and how good the Bing was I wouldn't have had to hunt so often for photographs. There are so few photos on British Listed Buildings, but I got the description of Rossley Manor from there which just sounded so right!

Another problem solved!

Rossley Manor was turned into a Residential Country Club around 1930.  Hmmmm wonder if there is a guest register anywhere?  Hey super-sleuth do you think you could find it?

I was just going to say it became a countryclub in 1930 for many years before reverting to a private house again.  One of the earlier owners had been a Mr Godfrey Hugh Wheeler; wondering if Joanna might recognise the name? I'm still wondering how you came across this house Cathy?

Joanna's grandmother was a Clytie Wheeler daughter of Henry Wheeler, solicitor and Sarah Isabella Brooks

Joanna sent me some photos and one had Rossley Manor 1929 written on the bottom - worked from there - plus a few red herrings on the way, lol.
