Hi, I'm Philip from South Africa. Privileged to have travelled by motorhome through England, Sept 2007. Always wondered what thoughts people had when they named a place after some town or region they came from. Newcastle may be apparent, but when you go to a place like Tadcaster, one wonders:why?

Lol! Philip!  Hi and a warm welcome to POE.  Smile

There are so many places around the world named after English towns, mountains, people, places.  I think you will find a Newcastle wherever the English settled (the same applies to the Scots!).

Hi Philip and a very warm welcomr to POE, a better cfrowd i have yet to meet online. We like a good banter and enjoy some jovial forums. Join in and enjoy the company, you will be more than welcome.

As to the naming of towns and villages there are great ones as I, sure you be aware. How they are named interests me in an amusing way, wondering what the people who named them were doing at the time....or something they saw at the site...which makes me wonder about the sanity of the founding fathers of these places

Dukinfield.......named after seeing some ducks in a field! ! ! !

Ramsbottom.....shudder to think what was going on naming this place

Penistone ????? even more wierd..answers on a postcard please !!!!!

I'm sure there will be a lot more to come from the very active (and inventive) minds we have on POE.....

Has anyone googled these to see if they were actually repeated else where in the world?
