Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Mary the Virgin, Worcester: the south cloister Worcester Cathedral has been the seat of a bishopric since the 7th century, and was served by monks until the Reformation. St Oswald and St Wulfstan were among the bishops. The southern alley may have contained an area for weekly ritual foot washing (Mandatum or Maundy), being close to the lavatorium and entrances to the refectory. A novice’s school and possibly one for the sons of rich tenants may well have been in this area. Since the 18th century, the Cathedral has been famous for its part in the annual Three Choirs Festival, the oldest choral festival in existence. Sir George Gilbert Scott supervised extensive renovation work in the 19th century. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: NIKON CORPORATION Model: NIKON D810 |

The Hope-Jones organ, Worcester Cathedral In 1894, organ builder Robert Hope-Jones was retained to rebuild two damaged water-powered organs as a single instrument. Hope-Jones had hoped to blow his organ with electricity but instead used a gas engine and rotary blower with the necessary engine house built on the outside of the south wall of the quire, near the St John Chapel. This organ continued in use for some 25 years until rebuilt by Harrison and Harrison in 1925. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed the beautiful casing you see here.
