Hardy's Dorset The Melbury Estate has a public right of way running through it connecting Evershot and the village of Melbury Osmond. The area nearest to Evershot is a large deer park with open pastures and woodlands. Hardy's Dorset At the opposite end of the Melbury Estate to Evershot is Melbury Osmond. The village is unspoilt and picturesque with many Oak trees. It is well worth walking down from the Church to the water splash and even beyond, to admire the 17th century thatched stone cottages. Hardy's Dorset Evershot is a small picturesque village midway between Beaminster and Cerne Abbas on the River Frome. It is one of the highest villages in the county at 700 feet above sea level. Hardy's Dorset The water splash and packhorse bridge, situated by Bridge Farm House, Melbury Osmond. In Hardy's novels the village is known as Great Hintock and is the setting for 'The Woodlanders'. The two and a half-mile walk between Evershot and Melbury Osmond, must have been both familiar and inspirational to him.
