Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter Built by William Mackworth Praed in 1769 as the Assembly Rooms, the ABode Exeter, formally the Royal Clarence Hotel, is credited as being the first hotel in England. In September 1770, Berton placed an advertisement for the business, describing it as "New Coffee-house, Inn, and Tavern, Or, The Hotel, In St. Peter's Church-yard, Exeter." This is possibly the first use of the word hotel in England. This picture was take on 5 October 2016 and on 28 October 2016 the hotel was gutted by a fire from which it may never be rebuilt. Exeter quayside Ships could at one time navigate up the River Exe to the Quayside that is still used in Exeter. Nowadays there are no big ships but there are plenty of shops and a pub in the old quayside buildings. Exeter Quayside – Custom House The former Custom House at Exeter was operated by HM Customs to handle the trade of Exeter Quay. The building, which was built in the early 17th-century, has been Grade I listed since 1953. Believed to be the oldest brick building to survive in Exeter, Historic England recorded that the building's "Renaissance-inspired facade and magnificent plasterwork, advanced joinery detail, early use of brick and the centralised double-depth plan are of the first importance in illustrating the arrival of a national or court style to Devon” This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |

Exeter's old shops The Lakeland store in Exeter was originally built as a home for a wealthy merchant around 1650 and is listed in many history books as 'The House of Ross'. Sometimes used as a dwelling house for judges and mayors, most of its life it has been a shop. On the frontage and you will see coats of arms of the many Guilds that the store once supplied goods to.
