Bicton House

Bicton House. In about 1800 John Rolle replaced an old manor house with the existing two storey mansion, designed by architect James Wyatt and built in red brick and limestone.

Bicton ducks

Single file, follow the leader. The Bicton ducks are touring the botanical gardens. They will end up in the lake or waterfall pond finally.

Bicton's roundabout

Autumn is definitely in full swing at Bicton. When you leave the park there is a roundabout next to which is this magnificently colured tree showing lovely foliage.

Bicton love birds

I think these ducks have made a home at the foot of a tree amongst an ivy bed. They looked very relaxed, comfortable and sleepy.

Bicton fungus

This mushroom is inverted! The head forms a V capture area for water whilst flies nibble at the edge of the fungus. I don't know if we could eat them and I'm not about to try.

Autumn Bicton

Autumn has finally caught up with the trees in Bicton Botanical Park and makes a splendid display of colours.

The Bicton fountain has a fine display, even on a cold November day. The sun deserves credit too.

The slope of the display area is quite evident when looking across to the wall and gate. The flower beds are still very colourful though - again!

Bicton lake

Another peek at Bicton's lake, complete with swan - I'm afraid the duck that was hiding in the foliage took flight and only left ripples!

Bicton redwood

How red is redwood? This is one of Bicton's Giant Redwoods, the bark of this one can be seen to be quite red.

Bicton WR

"Here is the 16:15 from Bicton Central calling at ............" Bicton's Woodland Railway takes passengers around the botanical gardens and will drop or recover them at various stations en-route.

Bicton Lake

The gardens at Bicton were begun in around 1735, most of the work was undertaken by John Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle in the early 19th century. This included the digging of the lake in 1812 by French prisoners of war.
