Bicton Holm Oak

The old gnarled tree shown has a tag on it which tells us “Quercus Ilex – Holm Oak, Mediterranean”. It must be an original because it looks so twisted and motheaten.

Bicton church

Since it was Sunday and Bicton Park was closed, we thought we'd see if St Mary, the church at Bicton, was holding services. We needn't have bothered because the gates were padlocked. Frustrated we went to see Sir Walter Raleigh in East Budleigh instead.

We walked to Bicton on Sunday. Despite the weather forecast we didn't get wet - it was just after lunch. When we arrived the gates, unfortunately, were closed with a "For Health & Safety" notice pinned up.

Budleigh Salterton – Bicton Park

Over 64 acres to explore "A delight for gardeners" Spanning nearly 300years of gardening history. On the border of the Park and agricultural land I spied this tree stump overgrown with a crown of ivy.

Budleigh Salterton – Bicton Botanical Gardens

The gardens at Bicton were begun in around 1735, most of the work was undertaken by John Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle in the early 19th century. This included the digging of the lake in 1812 by French prisoners of war, planting the arboretum in 1830 and the noted araucaria avenue in 1842. Other features include the orangery (1806), the "bulbous" palm house (c. 1825), and the castellated octagonal China Tower of 1839.

Bicton railway

At Bicton they have installed a new path that means a crossing across their railway track. Here is a shot straddling the track, no train was scheduled!

Bicton greenhouse

Two sentry dogs are guarding the greehouse at Bicton. They patiently wait at the foot of the steps.

Bicton Park

A general scene of the organised display of trees, flowers, lawns and to the left side probably the oldest wisteria bush in England - the footpath takes you through it even.

Bicton Park has a Tulip Tree that has blossom like tulips. It is definitely not a native tree of England.

Bicton dragonfly

These dragon flies were flitting about the lake and ponds of Bicton and were very flighty. This specimen landed on the gravel path resting, so I shot it.

Bicton Fountain

This tree is commonly referred to as the Handkerchief Tree. The Latin name is "Davidia involucrata".
