Stockport Town Hall, Greater Manchester Stockport Town Hall " The Wedding Cake" as it is affectionally known was designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas, and opened by the then Prince and Princess of Wales in July 1908.It is now a grade II listed building. An imposing Italian marble entrance leads to the Edwardian Ballroom, which former poet laureate Sir John Betjeman described as "magnificent". The Thatched House pub, Stockport, Greater Manchester Fore runner of Stockport Infirmary was a private house. “The Thatched House” on Spring Gardens was used as a free dispensary to the poor by the generous Dr Briscall. Stockport Market Hall, Market Place. Glass covered market hall built 1861. It was known as the "Glass Umbrella on Stilts" because the bottom sections were open to the elements when first built.
