Barn owl....tyto alba

I took this picture for two reasons really, one, Barn owls are becoming very rare and two, this bird was hunting in the middle of the day. Excuse the quality, it was 50 metres away!

Speckled wood butterfly......pararge aegaria

I have seen more speckled wood butterflies this year than any other breed. I hope this is a good sign for the future.

One of quite a few different varieties of ladybird in the UK.

Scorpion fly.....panorpa communis

Excuse the quality of this picture on a dull, foggy day please. It's the first one I've seen so I had to take a picture. Hopefully, I'll see one on a sunny day!

Large white butterfly (female).......pieris brassicae

Known commonly as a cabbage white, this butterfly was taking advantage of the September sun.

Hoverfly.....heliophilus trivittatus

Slightly different from the heliophilus pendulus, it has no white stripes on the abdomen.

helophilus pendulus

This is a fairly common hoverfly and can usually be seen along the banks of the canal.
