Church of St Mary the Virgin, North Stoke

Church of St Mary the Virgin, North Stoke

Interior of North Stoke Church. The Church is noted for its 14th Century wall paintings. Unfortunately the paintings are now somewhat indistinct due to the passage of time and the effects of repair work on the masonry. The pulpit is Jacobean and has a canopy or sounding board over the top, which helps with the acoustics. The font is 13th century. The pews are solid oak.

View of the south side of North Stoke Church (Grade I listed, 13th c). There is an unusual feature over the blocked-up south doorway in the form of a figure holding a Sun Dial protruding through the masonry.

Royal Coat of Arms St Mary the Virgin Church, North Stoke

Royal Coat of Arms St Mary the Virgin Church, North Stoke

This Royal Coat of Arms is set high up on the chancel arch, where it would be visible to all the congregation. It has the inscription GIIIR, which must set the date around 1760. The Lion of England is on the left, with the Unicorn of Scotland on the right, with another Lion at the crest. Interestingly, a free Unicorn was considered dangerous, hence the chains around it.

Sun-Dial on St Mary the Virgin Church, North Stoke

Sun-Dial on St Mary the Virgin Church, North Stoke

This very weathered-looking Sun-Dial is high up on the south wall of the Church. The hands and head of Father Time protrude rather eerily from the masonry of the wall. I can't find any information on the date of it, but it is clearly very old.
