Milestone, Maiden Bradley

Milestone, Maiden Bradley

There's supposed to be another one nearby along the Frome road (but it may have been lost, for it's not to be found). A rather nice example we have here though, albeit a bit forlorn and unlisted by National Heritage. (Will try to rectify this surprising! omission by submitting a listing request to the powers that be.)

K6 Phone Box, Maiden Bradley

K6 Phone Box, Maiden Bradley

Since the late 1960s, the K6 model red telephone kiosk has decorated Church Street, Maiden Bradley. Dilapidated somewhat now and ready for a new use. There's talk of a defibrillator unit conversion. I'd be sorry to see it go the way of all flesh, at least yet.

Zeals Knoll, Maiden Bradley

Zeals Knoll, Maiden Bradley

Zeals Knoll, close to Maiden Bradley village. Looking southwest from Beech Clump near White Sheet Downs, probably the best direction to capture the picturesque magnificence of this prominent landscape feature. To the left is Nor Wood, beyond which (out of sight) the small Wiltshire town of Mere. The barley has been reaped and its straw round baled in the fields

Old Garage, Maiden Bradley

Old Garage, Maiden Bradley

Erected in 1919 from military surplus, this local garage was run by Les Newbury, assisted by his brother Morris. Les trained as a Rolls Royce mechanic after doing his bit in the 'Great War' of 1914-18. He was married to Hilda who was a school teacher in the village for many years. According to the current owner Colin Dowson, who has lived in Maiden Bradley all his life, there was only half a dozen cars in the area. Mostly, back then, it was motorbike riding. Les would also be on call for local business jobs, including the farming community.
