Milestone, Maiden Bradley There's supposed to be another one nearby along the Frome road (but it may have been lost, for it's not to be found). A rather nice example we have here though, albeit a bit forlorn and unlisted by National Heritage. (Will try to rectify this surprising! omission by submitting a listing request to the powers that be.) Old Garage, Maiden Bradley Erected in 1919 from military surplus, this local garage was run by Les Newbury, assisted by his brother Morris. Les trained as a Rolls Royce mechanic after doing his bit in the 'Great War' of 1914-18. He was married to Hilda who was a school teacher in the village for many years. According to the current owner Colin Dowson, who has lived in Maiden Bradley all his life, there was only half a dozen cars in the area. Mostly, back then, it was motorbike riding. Les would also be on call for local business jobs, including the farming community. This picture appears in the following picture tour: |
