Battle of Britain Flypast Battle of Britain: Flypast for 75th anniversary of 'Hardest Day' Rather a long way away so the quality of the photo isn't great. I had expected them to fly over the field where Sergeant Hugh John Mortimer Ellis lost his life in 1940 but they didn't. This picture appears in the following picture tours: |
A Memorial To 'One of The Few' Memorial to Sgt John Hugh Mortimer Ellis. Sgt John Hugh Mortimer Ellis of 85 Squadron was shot down in his Hurricane on 1 September 1940, with the speed of his descent being such that his aircraft buried itself deeply in the field where it landed. Although a few unidentified remains were found around the time, buried separately at Star Lane Cemetery, St Mary Cray, it was not until 1992 that the remains of the Hurricane were unearthed, and Sgt Ellis' remains were identified, with burial taking place at Brookwood Cemetery. This memorial was unveiled on Chelsfield Green, near the site of his crash, on 17 May 2008. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ200 |
