Industrial Past One of the many old engine houses dotted around the area known as the "Great Flat Lode" so called as the seams of ore were nearly horizontal instead of the usual vertical. I wanted a series of sepia shots of the mines here known as South Wheal Francis to add some feeling of the past but an aeroplane vapour trail did not look right until I moved my position, and even then I had to move a time or two while I got myself set as the trail was slowly drifting across the sky. SOUTH WHEAL FRANCES- Marriott's shaft. This is part of the World Heritage site for Cornish Mining and is part of "The Great Flat Lode", known as such because the seams of ore are nearly always vertical, but in this area where many tons of ore were once won the seams lay almost horizontal, hence the name.
