Sluice Opposite the car parking area to Waverley Abbey is this tranquil scene which must be much quite something when the water lillies are in flower. One word of warning- this is right on the road and on a 90 degree bend so take care and watch for traffic. The Lay Brothers Refectory This is one of the remains of Waverley Abbey. It is in fact we see here the Refectory of the Lay Brothers, in the year 1180 there would have been about 120 Lay Brothers at the Abbey. Although no longer there now there would have been a dormitory above refectory back in the day. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Guaurding the Abbey The first thing one sees when visiting Waverley Abbey from the small car park is this relic from a more recent turbulent time. This is just one of a couple of these pill boxes, the other one looked quite a size. One wonders just how many of these defences are still dotted around our countryside. Waverley Abbey Approach This is the scene that greets you as park your car and walk through the gate. The footpath just here is about where the goldfinch obliged and sat still long enough for me to photograph. The remains of the abbey only hint at the size of what it was like in it's time. Waverley Abbey Ruins The nearest building to us is or was the Lay Brothers Refectory and the further building the Monk's Dormitory. The Abbey was built or founded in 1128 by William Gifford , Bishop of Winchester, and was the first Cistercian Monastery and remained as such for over 400 years until that Henry bloke did what he did with the Abbeys. On 12 October 1176 it was here that a grand parent of my wife and daughter died. It was William d'Aubigny 1st Earl of Arundel who married Henry 1st's second wife - Adeliza of Louvain. William now lies in Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Monastic Goldfinch After a look round Waverley Abbey, a walk back to the car takes one along the side of some lily ponds and this little character was having a fine time picking at all the plants along the waters edge. Every time I got near it would chirrup away as it flew further along and I reckon this spot was just too good to pass by so I was able to get a shot of it.
