Bookham Common

Bookham Common

It is what it says on the tin,and the Common has various habits over it's expanse including a series of ponds. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna to be seen and many folk take advantage of what is on offer. Walkers , horse riders and cycles all share the various tracks across the Common.

The Grass is Always Greener !!

The Grass is Always Greener !!

On the edge of Bookham Common this lucky cow has a huge area of the Common to pass the time of day, the herd are there for management of the allowing the habitat to grow in a more natural way-thus the insects and birdlife and flora can flourish. BUT, why then does this character go to great extremes to eat from the verge of the road that runs by the edge of the Common?

The Grange

The Grange

Well, today ( 1/09/2014 ) nearby Burford Bridge Hotel near Dorking re-opened after being totally flooded big time last Christmas Eve in the terrible weather then after nine months of work to repair the damage. Unfortunately another hotel has a different fate, this is/was the Bookham Grange Hotel and has been empty for a while but now the demolition boys have moved in. The Hotel is on the edge of Bookham Common , Iam not sure what is going to be done with the site but would guess more shoe horned houses. The area on the left already demolished was once the function room and in fact we had our wedding reception there a number of years ago. There goes some memories.

Half Moon Cottage

Half Moon Cottage

This is Half Moon Cottage in Little Bookham Street and it dates back to around 1500. I think it was originally called Hall House and was only single storey with smoke from the fire escaping through gablets in the ends of the roof ridge. Nowadays one can see that another floor level and a chimney have been added.

C.S.Lewis Was Here !!!

C.S.Lewis Was Here !!!

Well Ron this is the best I can do, this corner and the road leading away and bending to the right is as far as I can find out is roughly where the drive to Gastons would have been. Gastons was the house ( and farm further back in time ) where C.S.Lewis spent the majority of the Great War with William T Kirkpatrick ( The Knock )and his wife. Kirkpatric was a former headmaster of Lurgan College, County Armargh, N.I. and during his stay here he was privately tutored by the Knock before eventually serving his time in the trenches.
