A picnic on Box Hill Here can be seen a picnic spot on Box Hill with an interesting view, I see the different layers as a slice of life. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Southern Railway Taken from the Lookout at Box Hill looking South. The railway line from Dorking to Horsham can be seen about as far as Beare Green. No tripod or monopod with me so an O.S. Trig pillar provided a place to steady the camera. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
I cannot BEEleeve It ! The pipe here, beeleeve it or not, goes into the Box Hill cafe/shop. Fear not it is the entrance to an enclosed display hive so that visitors can watch the bees doing their thing inside the hive through perspex sides. It's a 'Topsy Turvey' world A shot of the inscription on the grave of a very eccentric gentleman. He said the world was all topsy turvey and if buried in this manner, one day he would be the right way up. He instructed when he was buried head first that his grave was to be danced on. He had the nickname " The walking dung-hill" because of his personal hygiene, or rather lack of. The grave stone does not mark the exact spot which is a few yards away on a very steep slope. The TV Man The house called Swiss Cottage where John Logie Baird lived is now in private hands and very secluded, so no actual shot of the house I am afraid, just the blue plaque by the gate. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-TZ25 |
Burford Bridge This is Burford Bridge hotel on the A24 mid way between Dorking and Leatherhead and very near to the bottom of "The Zig-Zag" at the base of Box Hill. Opposite the hotel is Rykas Cafe and car park, a mecca for the Sunday afternoon motor cycle gatherings ( along with the obligatory burn-ups up and down the dual carrigeway). Wannabees This is the bottom of the Zig-Zag at Box Hill where the Olympic cycle race is to take place and today there was a cycle event and there seemed to be so many having a go (don't forget the race itself goes up NINE times!! ). Sorry for poor focus, quick shot waiting to pull out, not many breaks in the queue. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: SAMSUNG Model: WB700 |
View From the Look-out (2) This view looks slightly more westward and takes in the town of Dorking. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ38 |

OSBM On the "views from the look-out" you can see a white trig pillar ( Ordnance Survey Triangulation Point) as well as having it's co-ordinates noted on the National Grid one can obtain it's elevation based on mean sea level at Newlyn. The noted height above sea level once noted can be used by using the brass plate shown here and using a special bracket to to place a surveyor's staff on for levelling.
