Westhuble Chapel Seen here is the West (and only)wall of what was Westhumble Chapel. The chapel was built in the 12th century but was desecrated in the 15th century and fell into disrepair, in 1937 it was taken over by the National Trust. It now has Ancient Monument status now. The Stepping Stones ?? This is the scene here today ( 09/02/14 )and somewhere under the water ARE the Stepping Stones. The River Mole has in fact been higher but there is still plenty of water around here-- and so I believe in the sky , just waiting to come down to Earth. Timeless Ticket Hall The station nowadays does not use all of it's buildings, the nearest part seen here was once the booking hall or ticket office ( whatever you like to call it) but since it has not been used for it's original purpose, it has been a florist shop and now a bicycle shop . It's Surrey - It's cycles. Ever since the Olympic cycle race which went nine times round Box Hill near here, Surrey has experienced a massive surge in popularity of cycling and this cycle shop at the Box Hill and Westhumble railway station is one of many springing up in the area. Westhumble Railway Station The shot shows how the original station was built with typical Victorian in 1867. It was built at the insistence of Thomas Grissell who owned Norbury Park and the railway line crossed his land. He also retained the right to flag down and board any train passing through the station even if it was not scheduled to stop at Box hill and Westhumble. Stepping Stones Over The Mole A view from the other bank to my previous visit to the Stepping Stones ( yes I did cross them). These stones are quite famous as they cross the River Mole at the base of Box Hill. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ38 |
Follow the Steps A rare moment without anyone on the stepping stones, this is a very popular spot and even in midweek there was a shortage of spaces in the nearby car park. The stones cross the River Mole near to the A24 at Westhumble where walkers can carry on and climb to the top of Box Hill. The Domino Effect- One in all In This was more representative of the stones today, with many walkers crossing the stones or just families going backwards and forwards over them. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Are you there Karen? This is Rykas Cafe at the base of Box Hill, just where the famous Zig-Zag road comes out near the Burford Bridge Hotel. Rykas has long been a mecca for all types of bikers and trikers, screaming Japanese bikes , chopped Harleys and everything in between. Driving on the A24 on a Sunday afternoon next to Rykas has been an experience in the past with bikes doing wheelies, going at very fast speeds and so on. However the law does show it's face here so things are not quite so mad these days. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: FUJIFILM Model: FinePix S5800 S800 |
