Just hanging around The River Mole flows towards the town centre here as it passes under the A246 (the bridge can be seen in the background). The original bridge was a Bailey bridge built by the Canadians during WW2 as well as this stretch of road. It is called 'Young Street' but has often been referred to as the 'Canadian Road'. RailWork Part of the town centre this area has rows of metal fencing and stone walls with insets of scenes in and around Leatherhead. Here is the railway near to Leatherhead station portrayed. The Running Horse This is one of the oldest buildings in Leatherhead dating from 1403 and built on Church land at the bottom of what is now Bridge Street and close to the banks of the River Mole. It was known in days gone by as " The Rummyng House" this was after an infamous landlady (barwoman) Elynour Rummying. On one of the walls inside can be seen a poem written by John Skelton called " Tunnying of Elynour Rummyng" - Skelton being poet to Henry VIII. On one occasion Elizabeth I is said to have said to have stayed at the Inn when the River Mole was flooded and impassable. During the 17th century the Inn was reputed to be used by smugglers. Today it is a typical 'local pub' serving beers spirits and food. I understand it has a reputation for many cask ales.
