The Bell Tower of St. Mary & St.Nicolas. A quick shot as I passed the church in Leatherhead this afternoon. The sun was just in a good position to catch the result you see, I have just cropped a few cars from the bottom of the shot and a little play with the colours. I grew up not one hundred yards from the church and would hear the bells clearly from my room- apart from Sunday I seem to remember on a weekday evening when practice took place and my god father/step father used to ring the bells here. The Happy Face of Leatherhead This street sculpture can be seen in the town centre outside a nameless supermarket. I am not sure of the significance of it but I have a feeling it may be something to do with the Leatherhead Theatre or as it was once known- The Thorndike Theatre. Bridge Street Bridge This is the bridge over the River Mole with the Running Horse pub behind me ( it's cellar was flooded by the rising river recently ). The scene here shows the way out of Leatherhead going towards Great Bookham and Guildford. I have against my normal rules had a go with this shot in a card graphics programme and turned all the lights on. Thornycroft and the Floods Thornycroft Manor can be seen through the trees and just off to the right is a house right at the end of the bridge, the river levels were very high here and many properties have been flooded, some twice ! Them Puddles are Still There This is opposite the Thornycroft Manor and was a very heavily flooded area of Leatherhead, I think some places have actually suffered flooding twice so far. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
There is Life Out There On a bike ride today there were signs of life in the countryside, catkins are there and I have also seen primulas ( I think ) and a daffodil trying it's luck. I also came across this, not sure what it is but for me it made a photo ! This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ38 |
Reflecting on the Flooding This is a spot where the River Mole had burst it's banks on Christmas Eve, had I been here then the water would have been well over my knees, as it is the water level is still high and areas such as this isolated patch of water ( one of many ) are dotted all over the place. This was an area where there was a rescue mission on Christmas Eve involving the Fire Service to save a number of horses cut off by the rising water- I am glad to say all horses were safely brought to safety. And Still The Water Rises This shot was taken last Sunday and shows the bridge across the River Mole as it passes through Leatherhead at the bottom of Bridge Street. Seen here the water level is way higher than I am used to seeing it, however, I have seen news pics of this bridge today and the water level is up around the solid grey line on the bridge -a further few feet higher or so !! Very near to the bridge is Leatherhead's oldest pub " The Running Horse " where Queen Elizabeth 1st once stayed- because the River Mole was flooded and could not be crossed !! ( History repeats itself ). Trouble is this time the pub has itself been flooded with the cellar very much suffering. I can remember this spot being flooded in September 1968 in which the flooding then was even more serious And I could not get to Guildford tech College to start my new year there . Seeds In The Sky Just branching out a little here, liked the contrast against the sky. Not too hot on identifying trees so if anyone knows their seeds just shout please. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
The Seat of The Flow This is not the River but the path alongside the riverbank,I was going to walk to the next bridge as there would have been a shot where the river widens and I have a shot on POE in less flooded times. However , here ended my quick walk and ended the rest of the pics- giving the 40mm STM a work out today and it is giving satisfying results. Soggy Seat Taken today after a fair bit of rain this past few days the River Mole seems to be getting to big for it's boots. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
A Reflection About The River Mole Taken from Thorneycroft Bridge, a very pleasing view of the edge of the town. Off to the right are fields given over to horses and a lot of horse riding in the area- Watch where you put your feet ! Three Swans a swimming Taken from the end of the bridge at the bottom of Bridge Street we see a family of swans having a Sunday afternoon paddle. This spot is always a place to see ducks, swans, geese, seagulls and any other winged creature that has dropped in and yet it is on the perimeter of Leatherhead town centre. And the river flows on This little fall on the River Mole is often a point where branches, logs and all sorts of rubbish can get trapped. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Red For Danger I think it is arum maculatum (cuckoopint) but do not quote me on it. I am sure though that this is poisonous so care to be taken. The plant was seen growing on the edge of the River Mole at Leatherhead. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Try again. I had taken a shot like this a year or two ago, but it was not 100% so here goes for another try, hope you like it. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ38 1 person has added this picture to their favourites |
To the Church This is the Church of St Mary's and St Nicholas in Leatherhead and I have driven past many times and seen this shot, at last an opportunity. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-FZ38 |
Steady on, one bit at a time Dinner has arrived, but someone is rather greedy and trying to eat it all at once. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D 1 person has added this picture to their favourites |
Here we are then The Woodpecker home on the banks of the River Mole at Leatherhead has a moment of excitement as little one's dinner has arrived. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Come along children, keep up please. Coming back from a bike ride I rode past the Mill Pond and came across this swan family. Mum, Dad and about five cygnets. The last time I was here the water was choked with algae. In places the water itself was crystal clear. Might have got a few more shots but camera bleeped at me and said "card is full".
