City Mill

City Mill

There has been a mill here on the Itchen since Saxon times, when Queen Elfrida granted a mill to Wherwell Abbey in about 988. The mill passed to the crown at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and in 1554 was granted by Queen Mary to the City of Winchster to help defray the cost of her marriage here to Philip of Spain. The current mill was built in 1744 as a tannery and later became a corn mill. It lost its machinery and was a youth hostel for many years. It was restored and started milling again in 2004 and was fitted with new Dutch made millstones in 2007. The wheel was turning but most of the visible flow is in the bypass channel.

Westgate Museum

Westgate Museum

The Westgate is one of only two fortified medieval gateways in the city to survive. It was built as early as the 12th century, with later additions in the 13th and 14th centuries. From that latter period comme the portcullis and two gunports, intended for use with handheld cannon. When the defensive needs of the city declined, Westgate was put to use as a gaol and debtors prison. Grafitti carved by prisoners can still be seen in the upper chamber. From the late 19th century Westgate has been used as a museum and secure storage for city archives. The displays are a little gruesome at times and include leg irons, armour and gibbet posts, last used in 1777 to publicly display the body of an executed prisoner. There is also a detailed ceiling painting commemorating Queen Mary's marriage at Winchester Cathedral in 1554, a collection of weights and measures historically used by the city, and a rooftop observation platform offering great aerial city views of the High Street.
