Parys Mountain The mountain was mined for copper ore in the early Bronze Age and dominated the world's copper market during the 1780s, when the mine was the largest in Europe . Copper was used to sheath the admiralty's wooden ships of war, in order to prevent the growth of seaweed and barnacles and to prevent boring by worms. This increased their manoeuvrability and made possible Nelson's victories. This picture appears in the following picture tours: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 5D |
Parys Mountain The Mona and Parys copper mines were located on Parys Mountain about two miles south of Amlwch in Anglesey . It was here on 2nd March 1768 , that a large vein of copper ore was discovered . This later developed into the largest copper mine in the world . Walking up the slope from the car park I was immediately struck by the vivid range of colours in this rocky , almost moon-like , landscape.
