Stamford St. Martin's Church was founded by 1146, and possibly earlier. By 1473, the chancel was described as 'ruinous', and the church was entirely rebuilt during the second half of the 15th century; possibly c.1482. Stamford St. George's Church , Georgian square , Stamford. The church is of very early origin and was possibly one of the four churches mentioned, but not named, in the Domesday Book (1086). It was certainly in existence by 1199. As it stands today, its short, narrow, rectangular tower, rebuilt in the 17th century, is barely noticeable above the skyline of the surrounding buildings.
