About Gwennap

This ancient mining town is popular for its natural amphitheatre which is believed to be carved out from the subsidence of a mine. It is often referred to as the Cathedral of Gwennap, the inference being this was the place where the evangelist John Wesley, founder of Methodism, preached to a congregation numbering 20,000. Wesley first preached in Gwennap in 1743. On his second visit in 1762, a wild gale rose up forcing John Wesley and his followers to seek sanctuary, and it was then that the preacher discovered Gwennap Pit and its unique accoustic properties. In all John Wesley preached at Gwennap 18 times.

Following Wesley's death in 1791 moves were made to make Gwennap Pit a memorial to him. The giant amphitheatre was re-modelled in 1806 to accommodate up to 5,000 people. To this day, it continues in its use as a preaching venue, not solely for Methodism but services are often conducted by the Church of England, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and other religious denominations, who join together in worship.

Gwennap is situated a short distance from the beautiful Carrick Roads and is within easy reach of Redruth.
