Ivy Cottage

Hello Forum,

Can any help me with a photo or information on Ivy Cottage. My g/g-parents lived there 1910-23.

Hi Max   I see you've asked this identical question elsewhere on the web; your great-grandparents surname would be handy to find them at Ivy cottage in 1911.  Found your Albert Forrest with lots of his family in 1911 in Stanhope, Durham. Are they all related around here? i.e.with those in Castleside.

Although you didn't ask, just in case you weren't aware, Albert left London for Sydney  26 April, 1912. Gave his occupation as Gardener.

Yes I have posted the same question at Roors Chat.

My g/grandparents names were John & Mary Forrest, John Died in Castleside 1916(b.1846), Mary 1923 (?)(b.1843) Albert (b.1889) left there 1912 .. joined the Aust.Army 1915 .. returned to Castleside 1919 for 3months, farmed for Mr J.Hull of Mainsfield Farm (this was under a Repatriation Sceme). After the 3monthshe then returned to Aust. and discharged 12/1/1920. I'm not sure if he then returned to the UK or remained in Aust.John & Mary Forrest were Alberts grandparents. I am not sure if there are any relations to John & Mary in Castleside, they originated from Allendale and Stanhope.

Well if you are looking for John and Mary Forrest, Albert was living with them in 1911 at Shittlehope Bury Stanhope.

That's what John's handwriting appears to say, though willing to be corrected on this. Can't seem to find any record of Albert comming back, though that doesn't guarantee he didn't. So, if they lived at Ivy Cottage, presumably it was at a later date than 1911.

Yes Im thinking its later than 1911 as John & Mary visited Aust. 1913 (about 6months +) so I assume they went to Castleside after that.

Am I in the right forum Paul to seek a photo of Ivy Cottage? It may have been demolished! 

Yes Max, your posts have come up in the forums of Poe, and I had a look at Castleside, and two photos just outside the village. I had the impression they had retired to Castleside for just a few years.

Interestingly, when John and Mary ( born 1846) went to Sydney leaving 24 Oct 1913;their children Maria and Thomas went with them. They all stated they were going to live in Australia ( rather than a visit) so after several months, did they have a change of heart and then returned to England to live at Ivy Cottage from 1914 onwards? And what happened to Thomas and Maria?

Mary did die 1923 aged 77, indicating 1846 again as birth year. 

Yes they must have had a change of heart (it may have been too hot).

Maria was their daughter & Thomas son-in-law (Coulthard) though I cant remember seeing them on the passenger list with John & Mary Forrest.

Their son Thomas and granddaughter Mary Hannah Wilkinson did go with them, I assume this is who your refering to !

Maria Forrest married Thomas Bainbridge Coulthard in 1913, Stanhope.

Settled in Australia (?) in Newcastle NSW. No family

Hi Max---In 1911 living together were John and Mary along with Thomas,Maria, Albert, and Mary Hannah Wilkinson at Stanhope.

Departing London 24 Oct 1913 on board the Orsova were John, Mary, Thomas, Maria Forrest all listed together p.11.  

A short distance down the list appearing to be traveling by himself is Thomas B Coulthard, aged 29.  

Turning to p12, also appearing to be traveling alone is dairymaid Mary Hannah Wilkinson aged 17.  Interestingly, her name/whole line has been blue pencilled out, and name not ticked against ( as other passengers here and there). Is this indicating she wasn't present, though you did say she indeed, did arrive. Maybe arrived just in time to board, and they'd crossed her off already as a no-show? Who knows?

But, it does look like the tickets for their journey were purchased prior to Maria and Thomas getting married, thus the passenger list is misleading as to the true situation.

Of course, we're now back to Ivy Cottage and Max's original question.
