Pictures of High Force

in the town of Forest-in-Teesdale, in the county of County Durham

About High Force

This is the Tees most spectacular offering, it is also England's highest waterfall. The best time to see High Force is just after a rainy period when the creamy waters in all their fury tumble seventy feet over a huge black cliff of the Great Whin Sill. It is a dramatic sight as the falls drop deep into a pool enclosed by rocks and shrubs. The Force is even more fascinating when a hard winter strikes, for then it has been known to freeze and appears as one gigantic piece of glass.

High Force stands in an area renowned for many beauty spots and picturesque whitewashed cottages. A wooded path takes visitors down a bank to the falls from an entrance opposite the High Force Hotel, this is a good place to stop on the way back for a well deserved glass or two!
