Hidden away, in an area of great natural beauty, is the bustling town of Appleby. It is situated in the valley of the River Eden near to Hoff Beck, stunningly beautiful, it is an ideal centre for both walking and touring.

Appleby, is well known for its Horse Fair. This colourful event takes place in the town each June and draws Gypsy families from all over the country - they come these days in the large comfortable trailers that have replaced the painted caravans of yesteryear. This event is as much about everyone having a good time as it is about - horse trading, and it is indeed a memorable fair to attend.

The Castle that was once the home of Lady Anne Clifford is sited at the top of the Main Street. It is one of the many buildings in northern England that Lady Anne restored following Civil War damage. Lady Anne died in 1678 and is buried in the local Church of St Lawrence, sited at the lower end of the main street. St. Anne's Hospital was founded by Lady Anne in 1651 as an almshouse. There are many other historic buildings in this northern part of England that Lady Anne was associated with.

Appleby is fortunate to be in the midst of much natural beauty, to the one side you have the rolling countryside of the Yorkshire Moors and, on the other side, the mighty peaks of the Lake District rise majestically as if to over-shadow the moors. This magnificence, is truly England at its very best.
