About Beetham

This is a village that at one time almost feared for its very existence as modern transport thundered through its ancient cobbled streets. Thankfully, calm is restored, the large lorries now soar along the M6 motorway, leaving picturesque Beetham to return to a more gracious way of life. The appearance of the village benefits from its fine position above the banks of the lovely River Bela, a famous haunt of local fisher folk and known for a good catch of Brown trout. It is a beautifully laid out village of stout houses and cottages drawn together by the use of local greyish limestone which gives an underlying unity of appearance and retains the historic flavour of the place. The village has an ancient past, it was first recorded in the Domesday book and is further illustrated by its 12th-century church. During restoration work in the 19th-century Coins dating from the time of Edward the Confessor were found in the church. The church contains many fine treasures and medieval stained glass. The north wall shows a window in which Charles I is the central figure, he is depicted as a martyr and to either side is St.Oswald and St.Alban.

Beetham is a pleasant place to stop and tarry awhile, not only does it have several interesting buildings to see and explore but it offers pleasant riverside walks and a peace and quiet hard to find in the busy world beyond. Beetham is close to the wide sweep of Morcambe bay, near the point were the River Kent concludes its journey to the open sea. The area abounds with riverlife and is an oasis for wildlife, the Lakeland Wildlife Park is just a short distance away. Other places of interest include, the Old Rectory at Millhead near Carnforth, Leighton Hall and there is a RSPB site at Silverdale. Beetham makes an interesting and ideal base from which to explore the glories of the Lake District and the beautiful Lancashire Plains.
