About Kemble

Historic Cotswold village, noted as the setting for the source of the River Thames. The spring from which the longest river in England flows, is found in the middle of a field, a short distance from Kemble. It is a somewhat inauspicious beginning for a river that has stood in silent witness to some of the greatest drama's in English history. Out of the annals of history, come tales of English Princes and monarchs transported along the Thames to meet their fate in the icy depths of the Tower. In recent times the river has witnessed scenes of joy and splendour as well as incredible sadness, such as when the body of Sir Winston Churchill was carried towards his final resting place.

Kemble lies on the old Roman Fosse Way. Built centuries ago, the Fosse Way was an important Roman route between Lincoln and Bath. Much of the route can be explored along present day roads and byways. It is an attractive village where not a lot seems to have changed. Leafy green lanes reveal delightful thatched cottages and houses of glowing Cotswold stone. The village school has a distinct Victorian charm but it is the beautiful parish church of All Saints that is the villages crowning glory. The church has a magnificent 120ft spire and a 13th-century south porch. The interior of the church is quite beautiful, it has fine stained glass windows and several beautifully carved memorial tablets. An impressive war memorial in the form of a large cross stands just outside the church.

An unusual feature of the village is that it has its own airfield. It also has a mainline railway station linking it to London. There is a strong community spirit amongst the residents of Kemble. All Saints church is well supported and the handsome village hall is regularly used. A cheerful atmosphere prevails and villagers greet visitors with a welcoming nod.

The popular tourist destination of Cirencester is within easy driving distance of Kemble. For those who wish to venture further, the towns of Cheltenham, Gloucester, Chippenham and Wiltshire are all within equi-distance of around 18-20 miles.
