About Quenington

The beautiful village of Quenington can be found on the banks of the gently flowing River Colne as it winds its way through unspoilt countryside towards Bibury.

In Quenington you can see some fine examples of well preserved 17th-century houses built of mellow Cotswold stone lining the main village street. Yet, lovely as these gracious dwellings are, it is the church dedicated to St. Swithen which is the main attraction for visitors to the area. The church was built in the 12th-century and has two magnificent carved Norman doorways. The doorway to the south depicts Christ crowning the Virgin Mary, whilst the one to the north of the church, shows in vivid detail The Harrowing of Hell. The church has many historic relics from the past when, like many Cotswold churches it benefited from the generosity of wealthy wool merchants. In the churchyard there is a War Memorial dedicated to the dead of the 1914-1918 World War.

There is a pleasant village green and a bridge crossing the Colne. Barnsley House Gardens can be found a short distance away. R.A.F. Fairford is also within easy reach.
