About Stonehouse

Stonehouse is an old Mill town close to Stroud and the Slad Valley of "Cider with Rosie" fame. It grew up as a centre for the woollen industry and today has a large and varied industrial community.

It has some quiet out of the way spots where you will often come across the unexpected, green fields, an old mill, or a cluster of ancient cottages hidden in a narrow lane.

One of the most famous buildings lies to the edge of the town, this is Stonehouse Court, a handsome former manor house of magnificent proportions which was built in 1601, and is now converted to provide comfortable hotel accommodation. It is surrounded by beautiful grounds, and fortunately retains much of its interior charm showing rich wood panelling and ornate ceilings.

Stonehouse parish church dedicated to St.Cyr is an ancient place which was largely restored during the 19th-century. It has outstanding stained glass windows throwing trickles of light into the rich interior highlighting stunning stonework and gleaming wood. The church has a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel and chapels. One of the treasures of the church is its beautiful font. St.Cyr's is crowned with an embattled Perpendicular style west tower with a north east turret. The church stands serenely in a lovely waterside location surrounded by tombs and graves of centuries, beyond which are lazy watermeadows where you may sometimes see ducks, swans and other wildlife species.
