About Barkway

Barkway is a pleasant little place that is delightfully set along the River Quin, it was once a coaching village on the route to Cambridge. In those days the streets would have been strewn with straw and the air would have been heavy with the noise and smell of horsedrawn traffic. These days, it is the motor vehicle that rumbles through the village, though many of those have forunately been drawn to the speedier major roads and motorways.

The houses here are a charming mixture of character and style. One row of houses with front doors opening directly onto the pavement demonstrates a blend of flint and brick cottages sitting alongside an elegant three storey property from the Georgian period. The lanes around these parts are interspersed with farmlands and barn conversions, again old mingles well with the new. It is all quite quaint and so very English. Here and there you will come across a fine old inn offering excellent food and a pleasing pint of ale and the nearby town of Buntingford offers splendid shopping opportunities. A short distance away, close to Royston you can find a Wildfowl Reserve and within easy driving distance are the lovely gardens at Benington.
