About Ferneux Pelham

Interestingly, these three beautiful Pelham villages belonged to the same family in the 13th-century and of the three, Furneux Pelham is the largest. At this point the family enjoyed close ties with the Bishops of London and it is perhaps because of these ties that we have the wonderful flint Perpendicular village church with a magnificent tower. The church, mainly 15th-century, has a two storey south porch and the south Chapel shows magnificent stained glass windows by William Morris and Burne-Jones. There are other impressive buildings to be seen in the village and the leafy lanes that connect to the other two Pelham villages, Brent Pelham and Stocking Pelham. Collectively the Pelhams are awash with lovely old thatched cottages and relics of medieval days survive in the form of stocks and a wipping post.

The unspoilt countryside is of hills and valley's, it is fertile land used mainly for grazing cattle and there is much to admire in the way of flora and fauna. A short distance away from Furneux Pelham is the charming village of Clavering that has a church dating from the 14th-century and several fine old cottages. The villages all around here provide a vision of delight, they have a picture post-card quality that never fails to enchant.

Nearby attractions include a museum and a fine 15th-century church in the pleasant market town of Bishop's Stortford
