Dover Castle is a medieval castle that was founded in the 11th century and is the largest castle in England, often being described as the 'key to England' due to its defensive significance throughout history.
The castle's keep, built by the Normans, is 100 feet square and just under 100 feet tall.
The site of the castle also contains one of Dover's two Roman Lighthouses, or faros, of which there are only three surviving in the world. It is around 2,000 years old and is the most complete standing Roman structure in England, and is the tallest Roman building north of the Italian Alps that is still left standing.
There is much to discover at Dover Castle, with history through the centuries, from Roman times and through the world wars and the cold war where its tunnels were to be a shelter for the British Government in the event of a nuclear attack.
