a Seaside Town in the county of Kent

About Ramsgate

Ramsgate lies at the centre of three famous east coast resorts, the other two being Broadstairs and Margate. It is also not far away from the coast of Deal, the area in which Julius Caesar tried to land in 55 BC.

Ramsgate's harbour is constantly busy, this is known as a "Royal" harbour, made so by the landing here of King George IV in 1822 and it is this visit that gave the town the popularity it has enjoyed ever since. There is also a picturesque marina, this is always a lively place where it is a pleasure to wander around just to look at tall mast yachts and bright sailing boats. The fact that the town is known first as a ferry port takes nothing away from the pleasant ambience felt in its streets, gardens and along its brightly lit promenade.

The main bathing beach lies to the north of the harbour, this is quite safe for swimming as long as you stay clear of the harbour wall. The sands are fun for children and good for sun-worshippers.

The town preserves many handsome Georgian properties, of interest is St.Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, this was designed by Pugin it dates from 1851 and is where he is buried.

Ramsgate is busier than its near neighbour Broadstairs, and probably less hectic than Margate. It offers much of interest with chalk cliffs, sands at nearby Pegwell Bay and at close-by Sandwich there is a nature reserve and the Royal George Golf Links.

With plenty of shops, restaurants, inns, hotels and other sorts of holiday accommodation, Margate makes an ideal resort for a family holiday.

Interesting & Historical Facts about Ramsgate

Queen Victoria used to occasionally worship at St Laurence Church just outside Ramsgate in an area known as St Lawrence. The different spellings are alleged to be the result of an error in the 1700's and perpetuates to this day.
